Description
Churchill Downs Inc. acquired the Turfway Park Racing & Gaming facility in Florence, Kentucky. R2A & R2I designed the ground up +/- 150,000 sf replacement entertainment facility to the original circa 1950’s Grandstand as well as to design the new +/- 42,000 sf extension facility to the Turfway Park nearby in Newport, Kentucky.
The original extension facility, known as Newport Racing & Gaming, included an Historical Racing Machine (HRM) Facility, Simulcast Suite, Center Bar with food & beverage offerings as well as administrative offices and back-of-house support program.
The design included the renovation of the existing building’s exterior façade, complete demolition and fit-out of the interior spaces into a contemporary entertainment center.
In November 2021, Newport Racing & Gaming opened their 14,000 sf expansion which consisted of a new area designated for smoking which allowed the original gaming floor to remain smoke-free. The new space also featured a bar with a stage area for live entertainment.
